[Province of Amazonia – Brazil] In the Community Our Lady Help of Christians situated on the left bank of the Tocantins river, in the city of Cametá, Pará state, the Daughters of Charity fulfill their mission through child and adolescent education. In 2014, the Institute of Our Lady Help of Christians has 890 students (from kindergarten through high school) and its purpose is educating for life offering human, spiritual and scientific formation. It is also a formation community for young women who wish to continue knowing the path of Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac, giving oneself to God to serve Him in the poor, in the Postulant stage.
Sisters serve those who are poor, meeting them at school and visiting them in their houses. In order to help in their promotion, a Project was organized which they called, “Bank of the Poor” (Saint Joseph Project to Promote the Poor). Its goal is to verify with the person involved what he/she can do, provide the resources to begin a work and little by little, the person gives back the amount used by him/her. The financial resources of this Project come from donations, bazaars and selling of products made by the Sisters during the year and have been used to build houses, buy fishing supplies, candy, and several other things that could help those people to live.
Our aim is that they feel valued and reach their financial independence by working. Everything is done that they get out of the situation of begging and earn their daily bread. It’s a beautiful and rewarding work, although it takes time, and it is worth investing the effort.
