Social dining room
Now, in this hundred year old dining room more than 500 meals are served daily. It is open 365 days of the year and a total of 144 families – formed by 277 adults and 328 minors – collect their food to take it home. About 170,000 meals are served annually. The clients are people from 86 countries, including Morocco, Rumania, Central America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Countries of the East. They are people between the ages of 18 and 65 with the majority of Spaniards aged 55 and older who have been unemployed for a long time. There are also immigrants, with prevalence of young people. And there are people with mental health problems and addictions, mainly from alcohol.
San Vicente de Paúl Integral Program
In 1997 the social dining room was restructured and become the Integral Program San Vicente of Paúl (PISVP) in order to offer a more integrated answer to the needs of people who came to have a meal. Now, besides a meal, the Integral Program Vicente of Paul offers:
- A Day Center with capacity for 50 people. In a year it welcomes more than 1,657 people.
- A Welcome Center for 15 people.
- Insertion apartments: there are 6 that take 35 single people or with small children.
- Social Support Apartments: there are 16 for 70 people, 45 of them adults and 25 minors.
In total, more than 800 people are assisted daily in the Program.
Along all its course, the “María Inmaculada Soup Kitchen” has had the collaboration of many people including volunteers, without whom this Project would not be possible.
The collaborators who help financially are the Madrid City Council, private donors and the Community of the Daughters of the Charity. The annual cost of the program is 1,100,000 €, of which 50% comes from City Council, 20% from private donors (although this quantity is variable; this year has been lower); and 30% the Daughters of Charity who also provide the facilities, the apartments, upkeep of properties and the volunteer work of several sisters. There are also donations in kind, such as the Food Bank and food from several companies.
In total, 200 volunteers, among whom are 9 sisters, and 23 paid workers make this wonderful project possible.
