Being God’s instruments: a response to COVID-19
We, the Sisters of the Provincial House Community, responded to the clarion call of the Covid -19 by distributing the provision kits and hygiene products to 1500 families from the slums as well as to migrant workers and other poor people in the streets. We purchased the said provisions from wholesale shops with the help of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Sisters, the candidates to our Company and those working in the community repacked the goods. Around 3,000 face masks were also sewn and distributed together with the kits.
Despite the fear of contracting the corona virus or becoming a carrier that will infect the Community and the children residing in the house, we took this bold step to reach out to the needy. The greater risk however is that of closing our eyes to the virus of hunger and this is what impelled us to overcome the fear of the disease. The challenge was to observe all precautions and obey the rules and regulations, besides seeking permission from government officials and the police department. The authorities were initially hesitant but we were granted approval; in fact, they were kind and supportive of our endeavours.
We rejoice that God used us as His instruments to bring solace to the poorest of poor persons in society; the smiling, wrinkled face of the elderly widows and others like them were God’s image and will always remain fresh in our memory.
Similar help was rendered to the most deprived in society by other DC Communities in the Province: St. Vincent’s house in Manmad, Shanthi Rani Nilayam in Kallal, Karunambika House in Hemachandrapuram and St. Vincent’s House in Oragadom.
