10th Interprovincial Meeting of the Vincentian Vocational Animation Service in Brazil
Encouraged by the hope that never disappoints, representatives from the six Provinces of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, the Priests of the Congregation of the Mission, the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul of Gysegem, the religious of Saint Vincent de Paul, and the members of the Fraternity House of Ranquines gathered at the Provincial House of Our Lady of Graces in Recife, Pernambuco, from April 30 to May 4, 2025. The purpose of the meeting was to assess the progress of this service over the past three years, reflect on contemporary challenges in vocational animation, and outline strategies for the next three years.
INSPIRATIONAL THEME
The guiding theme of the meeting was “Joyful in hope, let us cast the nets”, inspired by the Scripture passage “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mt 4:19).
This theme shaped the event’s reflections. Just as Jesus called His disciples to follow Him and become fishers of men, vocational animators are called to proclaim the Gospel and inspire young people to follow Christ, casting their nets with joy and hope.
The event featured renowned speakers who provided essential insights into vocation and evangelization:
With the theme “Joyful in hope, let us cast the nets,” Father Edicarlos Alves, OMI, emphasized that a vocational animator must, above all, be a joyful individual. He highlighted that their first mission is to pray for vocations, create spaces for spirituality, and foster moments of personal, communal, and ecclesial reflection. Additionally, he emphasized:
- Clarity in the charismatic identity of the Vincentian vocation.
- Proximity to and engagement with young people, fostering genuine welcome and interaction.
- Strategic use of digital media for communication and evangelization.
Brother Márcio Ferreira, Marist, discussed the challenges and perspectives of vocational accompaniment in Brazil, advocating for a transition from a vocational mentality to a vocational spirituality, thereby fostering a solid vocational culture.
Based on Luke 24 (the disciples on the road to Emmaus), he highlighted the key steps of Jesus’ vocational pedagogy:
- Approaching with tenderness and care.
- Deep and empathetic listening.
- Building trust between animators and young people.
- Clearly defining the evaluative criteria of the vocational calling.
Father Wellington Jean Souza shared reflections on affectivity and sexuality in vocational accompaniment. He emphasized the importance of living consecration while respecting individual sexual identity and addressed the need to:
- Understand young people holistically, without prejudice.
- Develop active and welcoming listening, fostering trust.
- Create open spaces, encouraging solid and structured accompaniment.
PILGRIMAGE AND SPIRITUALITY
As pilgrims of hope, the participants visited significant historical sites of faith, including:
- Dom Helder Câmara Memorial House
- Sé Church of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, where Dom Helder is buried
- São Félix de Cantalice Convent, where Friar Damião de Bozzano rests
At these sacred places, they celebrated the Eucharist, strengthening communion and their evangelizing mission.
COMMITMENTS FOR THE NEXT YEARS
Inspired by the Holy Spirit and the insights gained from the meeting, the participants made three fundamental commitments to strengthen vocational culture:
- PRIORITIZE vocational culture within communities by deepening spirituality and intensifying personal and communal prayer.
- PROMOTE specialized training for vocational animators, addressing current topics such as affectivity and sexuality.
- DEVELOP a unified strategic plan for the Vincentian Vocational Animation Service (SAVV), covering key stages such as awakening, discernment, cultivation, and accompaniment.
GRATITUDE AND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
To God, we offer our praise and gratitude for the blessings we have received. The 10th Interprovincial Meeting was a time of learning, sharing experiences, and renewed encouragement for the mission.
May Mary, Mother of All Vocations, intercede for this precious service so that vocational animators, filled with joy and enthusiasm, may reach young people with missionary zeal, casting their nets with faith and hope!
